Today’s prompt challenges us to “write a “concrete” poem – a poem in which the lines and words are organized to take a shape that reflects in some way the theme of the poem. This might seem like a very modernist idea, but poets have been writing concrete poems since the 1600s! Your poem can take a simple shape, like a box or ball, or maybe you’ll have fun trying something more elaborate, like this poem in the shape of a Christmas tree.” ~ NaPoWriMo, Day 9

My previous attempts at concrete poetry haven’t been too successful, so I approached the prompt with some trepidation. In the end, I decided to purge the guilt accumulated by giving up on old drafts with the help of an imaginary fire ritual. Not sure whether the shape of the poem managed to capture its essence, but I’m moving on a little lighter today.

  1. I absolutely love this poem, and how the words mirror and inform the architecture of the lines. The form is as masterful as the words are. At some subconscious level, I see the shape of the poem as a weaving or an embroidery pattern. A balm for my heart! So beautiful, sweet Romana, so you. THANK YOU. Love always ❤️🐝

    1. Aww, thank you, dear Marga–your words are priceless!🥰 I was surprised when I got to the last line and counted back 14 lines–a sonnet! So glad my subconscious was pitching in a bit. 💜

  2. Definitely on fire with this, and I love how the poem distances and weaves back together at the end with the shape! Long knuckled syllables and long knuckled bodies – what a vivid, unforgettable image!
