NaPoWriMo 2020: Poetry from the trenches, Day 16

Today’s prompt challenges us to “write a poem of over-the-top compliments. Pick a person, place, or thing you love, and praise it in the most effusive way you can. Go for broke with metaphors, similes, and more. Need a little inspiration? Perhaps you’ll find it in the lyrics of Cole Porter’s “You’re The Top.” (Scroll down at the link for the lyrics and an annotated explanation of them).” ~ NaPoWriMo, Day 16

I must have been plunged into a witchy mood by fellow poet Shuku Li’s Banishing Spell and that mesmerizing piece by Arne Mellnas entitled Aglepta, which she links to on her blog (thank you, Shuku!). Even though I followed the prompt’s instructions, trying to praise and be effusive, my over-the-top compliments took a dark turn toward medieval witch trials and I ended up with a sad persona poem. This being said, I hope that my witch’s affection for her companion comes through. Witches are capable of love too, you know.

PS–Most of the poems written this April will remain online for up to five days, after which they will be replaced by an excerpt, an erasure, or a thoroughly amateurish art piece that will only allow for bits of the original poem to peek through. At least, this is the plan. The reason being that, at some point, in the hopefully not too distant future, these drafts will undergo revision and begin their multiple-year pilgrimage through the slush piles of many a literary journal. So help me, O Muse.

PPS–The seashell angels did their thing and I did mine. They started introducing strange symbols and won’t tell me what they mean. But because today was Earth Day, I assume that’s our planet, there, in the center? What do these angels have in mind for us?

  1. I really like that it reads like a spell. And I agree with your introductory note, it got a bit dark and a lot sad. Goodbyes and the flambéing of hearts are rarely happy things.

    Really love the presentation, too.

  2. Oh, my comment posted fast, before I finished it. (Or even out the proper spacing between words, lol.) I wanted to go on to say how much I loved the images, the songlike feel, the sentiments … and I delighted in the items chosen to represent the love and constitute compliments. (Oh yes, I know that witches can love!)

Well, if you insist on removing your drafts from this blog so quickly, when I’ve only just discovered you and won’t have a hope of catching up, please let us all know when a book finally appears.

    1. Thank you so much, Rosemary–I’m happy the poem spoke to you! I have so much affection for this witch. I’m pretty sure half of the items on her shelf are counterfeit and there for effect, since any respectable witch is expected to have them and wouldn’t be able to make a living otherwise… In the end, she’s all too convincing. This sad irony makes me love her even more.

Regarding a potential book publication–hear, hear, from your lips to an editor’s ear! 🤞🤞🤞

  3. It’s not like you to rhyme so much, but you rhyme the Romana Way. It was not oppressive, but very skilfully done. It felt very medieval with the bogs and carts and scythes. Witches were just strong females I feel. Be wild!

    1. Thank you, dear Manja!🥰 Would love to take credit for the photo but it’s borrowed. Also, I’m discovering that the older I get, the more in love I am with crows. I think I’d have been burned at the stake in medieval times. I seem to check most of the boxes for ‘witch.’ Minus the various body parts on the shelf, though who knows… these are strange times. I may yet evolve into a wild woman.

  4. A piece worth reading, I enjoyed it very much. I like your idea to hide your work. I’ve removed some of my NaPo drafts over the years for the same reason so it gets messy! I’ve had to pull out this year for health reasons (not Corona) but am reading others work. Well done with this.
