Today’s prompt challenges us to “write an ode to life’s small pleasures. Perhaps it’s the first sip of your morning coffee. Or finding some money in the pockets of an old jacket. Discovering a bird’s nest in a lilac bush or just looking up at the sky and watching the clouds go by.” ~ NaPoWriMo, Day 18
Not sure the weirdly-shaped poem below is an ode, exactly. Neither are the pleasures it describes too small. As for words, they often cannot contain all my gratitude for the moments suffused with beauty woven through my life. But I’m here for now, and I’ll keep trying to praise and give thanks as long as I can.
PS–Most of the poems written this April will remain online for up to five days, after which they will be replaced by an excerpt, an erasure, or a thoroughly amateurish art piece that will only allow for bits of the original poem to peek through. At least, this is the plan. The reason being that, at some point, in the hopefully not too distant future, these drafts will undergo revision and begin their multiple-year pilgrimage through the slush piles of many a literary journal. So help me, O Muse.
PPS–The original poem was so short that the erasure is barely a sentence. To make matters worse, these seashell angels of mine are now talking exclusively to each other. I feel totally left out. Not sure what I did to deserve being ignored, but I know I did something. Good thing there’s always tomorrow. They’ll speak to me tomorrow, right?

Lovely – concrete poem. Ephemeral and spiritual at the same time.

So many layers to this — it’s a poem that needs study and discussion. I find myself reading it again and again. Exceptionally well done.

Thank you, Bee! This one didn’t look right in any other shape I tried. It knew what it wanted more than I did.

Oh my goodness! The shape. The feeling. I love when I start reading a poem and I say, “Yes, exactly, I’ve felt this and never thought to say it.” Beautiful!
