Original Winnie-the-Pooh drawing by E. H. Shepard
I’m thrilled to be one of the featured NaPoWriMo participants today, along with the inimitable Arti Jain of My Ordinary Moments!🎉💜🥳 It was NaPoWriMo 2017 that brought me back to poetry after a long hiatus and to be recognized like this means the world to me. Many thanks to Maureen Thorson for gathering us again around the fire, so we can release into the wild all the words we’ve cooped up inside us for a very long year.
Today’s prompt challenges us “to write a poem that, like the example poem here, joyfully states that “Everything is Going to Be Amazing.” Sometimes, good fortune can seem impossibly distant, but even if you can’t drum up the enthusiasm to write yourself a riotous pep-talk, perhaps you can muse on the possibility of good things coming down the track. As they say, “the sun will come up tomorrow,” and if nothing else, this world offers us the persistent possibility of surprise.” (Full NaPoWriMo post available here.)
As for my response, it’s an example of what reading nursery rhymes and A. A. Milne obsessively to your children might do to you. The last line came out unintentionally racy, but I’m not apologizing for it. It’s the lucky number 13 that did it! Also, I’m so happy to have found E. H. Shepard’s original illustrations to Winnie-the-Pooh. Today is a truly lucky day. (Did the world exist before the internet? Did we?) And last but not least, if you haven’t yet watched the film Goodbye Christopher Robin, please do. It’s wonderful.
PS–The posted draft has expired, but here’s its erasure and a map of an undiscovered continent to keep you company. The erasure doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but it’s what I’ve got. The map makes a lot of sense to me but possibly to no one else.

today
I will be a newborn sun.
confused.
I will be found.
glad.
I will be a book.
a bear.
and God.

O! Romana…That you used ‘inimitable’ to mention my work here is the best hug a poet has ever sent my way and that I read this sublime offering of your thoughts woven in words of your choice to paint images my heart would like to hold on to like Pooh holds on to his jar of honey–(do I lick it or preserve it?)–tells me everything is amazing.
Thank you.

For an unpoppable poet, your words sure go Pop Pop Pop a lot! A rollicking, untoppable read. Where I am, we’ve had unseasonable hail and abrupt wet snow this week. Something is definitely flowing in a funny direction.

Gosh, I hope the sleet doesn’t stay. I always worry about the trees when it’s unseasonably cold. Nature is discombobulated and it’s our fault. Thanks again for the kind words–they truly made my day!🙏💜🍃

Winnie and Pippi were how my life began. Really, it’s all downhill from there, but not really because you carry them with you all your life. You are unpoppable too. Much love.

I think we’re all unpoppable–just not always aware of it (I’m rarely aware of it). I wish some of my early childhood companions weren’t soviet books, but I got to redo that part by reading wonderful books with my children… Sending love from here💜🍃

Sweet, sweet poem surioara iubita. Thank you so much for the inspiration. I adore these lines, [quote deleted by RI] And yesterday’s poem which I missed and went back to read is a masterpiece. I adore the art and craft with which you enliven words, and in return, they enliven all of us, the readers. This line, “Try to blend in with the universe, which is made/of endless blades of grass.” I adore this image and your fresh way of looking at the universe. Just beautiful! With boundless love and gratitude always – Bastet ❤️🐝🙏🏽

Thank you so much, Kim! I really appreciate it. Milne’s stories made for many a cuddly and giggly afternoon at our house when the kids were young.💜🙏🍃
