NaPoWriMO Day 29, 2022

Today’s prompt challenges us “to write a poem in which you muse on the gifts you received at birth — whether they are actual presents, like a teddy bear, or talents – like a good singing voice – or circumstances – like a kind older brother, as well as a “curse” you’ve lived with (your grandmother’s insistence on giving you a new and completely creepy porcelain doll for every birthday, a bad singing voice, etc.). I hope you find this to be an inspiring avenue for poetic and self-exploration.” (Full NaPoWriMo post available here.)

Here’s my somewhat sinister take on the prompt. Today is is my actual birthday, so this piece is my gift to myself, such as it is. Disclaimer: I love words. I cherish them and worship them and so on. But today they wanted to role-play and they asked for the part of the villain, so here we are. They are really very good words. Most of the time.

PS–The posted draft has expired, but here are some blooms to brighten your day.

    1. Thank you so much, dear Manja—also for the whole month and the many profound and supportive comments. I know you’ll keep writing—may the force be with you!—and I hope to run into you again long before next April.💜🙏🍃

    1. Thank you, Sonia! Nah, we’re just playing. I’m not exactly the speaker of the poem, but also, I’m not exactly not her. They’re behaving today, these rambunctious words.🙏💜🍃

  1. This reads like the growth of a writer. Words do take over, perhaps more so for a poet than a novelist. Then the characters take over. I’m sure you’ll be let back in, crack the whip and call the words to order.
    And happy birthday 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, Jane! I’m so glad this reads like writerly growth. It’s about time, I’m gonna hit half a century next year. As for that whip, I keep cracking it, then let the words crack it for a while. It’s a very democratic process.🙏💜🍃

  2. Happy birthday, Romana 🙂 Your poem has a very deep meaning, Maybe it is fear, loneliness, or not having people to talk around. Hope you have put those ghosts to rest. Have a great birthday.

    1. Thank you so much, Sunita! It might be all those things, or mere curiosity about what words can do. The ghosts do help me write most of the time, so I keep them awake and hungry. I really appreciate your reading and commenting.🙏💜🍃

  3. A very happy Birthday to you, Romana. I hope you have a wonderful day full of smiles and words XXX

The poem is outstanding. It’s so easy to imagine you as a child playing with words :)- they come so easily to you and you weave such beautiful poetry out of them. The lines about life coming in between and words moving out were totally relatable.
And the line about you satisfying every whim, I had written a poem some time ago with the same thought. It was titled, ‘That child called Passion’.

Wishing you a very special day again.
