Old wall in Malá Strana, Prague,
April 22, 2022
Today’s prompt challenges us “to write a poem that uses repetition. You can repeat a sound, a word, a phrase, or an image, or any combination of things.” (Full NaPoWriMo post available here.)
I’m combining two prompts into one, since I was traveling last week and missed a couple of prompts. The prompt from day 15 asked us to write about something we had absolutely no interest in. I started this poem during a long drive on April 15 and finished it today. Well, finished this draft in any case. Tomorrow I’m traveling again, so we’ll see if I manage to write and post anything by evening. Fingers crossed, as always.
PS–The posted draft has expired but here is a video of Willow in Prague (April 2022).
the rush of the final lines – after hearing my own voice mouth your words – almost the invert of cement – a flowing, a flowering, even.
2nd only to water – astonishing. now I know why my brilliant nephew has begun working with a cement maker that hopes to save the world by sequestering carbon in its mixture. ~

I’m so glad you read the poem this way–thank you! And I truly hope your nephew is successful in his endeavor.🙏💜🍃

Romana, how you made the most mundane of things, cement into something unforgettable – that is poetry at its best.
I’m going to look at cement and think of you❣️

Thank you, Smitha—you’re very kind! Writing about something I used to find boring certainly shifted my perspective on it.💜🍃

The only things I know about cement are that it’s been used for millennia and f(or me) it begs the question, what is the difference between cement and concrete? It’s grey and boring, and I’d much rather have your alternatives, ‘stardust
& plant cells, rock, rain, glass,
clay’,

Thank you, Jane!💜🙏🍃 I had thought of cement as gray and boring too, which is why I picked it.🤣 Then I learned that it’s one of the components in concrete and that concrete happens to be one of the most-consumed resources in the world, second only to water. I’m not sure what happens now that I know this, but for some reason I’m glad that I do. Strange how knowledge works, even if it’s in very superficial doses.

All knowledge is good, to be squirreled away for later. Sometimes the most footling bit of information can make us feel good, just because we know it to be true 🙂

Another poem that I wish I’d written. So much of it resonates with me.
Just going back to read it again

Thank you, Romana
But was it about a rabbit….?

I wondered about that. The rabbit sounded eerily human.

It was indeed supposed to be

If I wasn’t interested in cement before (and I have to say I don’t really think about cement at all), I am now.

Thank you!🥰 I must say, cement grew on me the more I held it in my mind.

Beautiful. Who’d imagine that cement can turn into such amazing thoughts and words.

Thank you, Sonia!💜🙏🍃 Cement kind of surprised me too. I looked into it and it turns out that concrete, which is made from cement, is one of the most consumed resources in the world nowadays, second only to water.
